History

The first shrine
According to ancient legend, Araki Jinja has worshiped the soul of Inari Okami in Ibaradani, Mt. Inari since the time when Inari Okami was enshrined on Inariyama in Wado 4, to today. The current name of Araki comes from the soul kanji of Mitama is also read as "tree," and from the place where trees grow on Mt. Inari, it changed to be the "tree" kanji.
Araki Jinja shrine and worship hall in the Taisho era

It was worshiped in the form of today from the early Meiji era, and the main gods of the three pillars of Araki Okami, Shirasuna Okami, and Aratama Okami were the main gods in the shrine and worship hall relocated from the Kyoto Imperial Palace. He has also been entrusted with the management of Inariyama government-owned land. At that time, there were also public houses coming and going, and when I came to Mt. Inari, there are still some furniture and pictures that were used to change my clothes.

State of the new shrine building festival

After that, the office was built in Showa 29, the new shrine was completed as of Showa 28, the prayer hall in front of the main shrine was renovated in Showa 38, and the precincts were improved in Showa 47. Construction work to renovate the hall of worship into a Kagura hall and maintenance of Mitsuka have been carried out to this day.

Nagoshisai Information on Shinto rituals

 Nagoshisai
Kaya no Wa Kuguri Shinto ritual
  7/2(Sun) from 1 p.m.

This year, we will resume the chinowa kuguri ritual with everyone.

About the Nagoshisai and Kaya no Wakuro Shinto rituals

A long time ago in the gods, Susano Onomikoto asked the brothers of Kotan Shorai and Somin Shorai for accommodation during their journey. Wealthy giants refused to stay in the future, but Somin Shorai was poor but hospitable. After that, Susano Onomikoto visited again and gave the Somin Shorai a ring of kaya, saying that if he wore it and made a ring of kaya, he could avoid disasters. And when the epidemic broke out, the Somin Shorai family fell ill, but the Somin Shorai family, who wore a kaya ring, were saved.
Following this ancient affair, Kaya has a spirit of purifying the mind and body as a sacred plant. It was a Shinto ritual to pray for disease-free breathing.

Kaya no Wa Kuguri Shinto ritual

In front of the main shrine, all the attendees chant “Oharai” and then sprinkle Kirinusa (finely cut hemp and paper) on their shoulders to purify themselves.
Then, while chanting "Minazuki's Natsukoshi's worshiper ...", he goes through the ring of Kaya three times, starting with the priest holding a doll.

God of back pain Ashikaga Inari Daimyoujin

This god was originally displayed as a lantern in the tsubo-niwa of a townhouse in the south of the Imperial Palace. Around Showa 40, a family member complained to his husband that a ghost of an armored warrior appeared, but when the master did not listen, all the family members could not get up due to back pain of unknown cause. Then one day, a strange monk visited me and said, "The cause is the lantern in the garden, so please put this lantern in Araki Jinja on Inariyama." When they dug up a lantern in the garden about 50 cm high, the engraved names "Ashikaga Inari Daimyoujin" and "Okunobo" were found on it. The lanterns were brought to our shrine, but the stone dealer who did this job also had a backache and couldn't get up. The priest at that time thought that he would hold a festival in a different place from now, so he placed it next to the current Chozuya, but this time the wife of the person who was taking care of the believers at that time couldn't get up because of back pain, and an armored warrior appeared in her dream and said, "Tell the priest to worship at your current location." As soon as the priest who heard it worshiped the lantern at the current location, all the back pain was healed, and since then, he has been worshiped as "the god who heals the back pain".

Syuse Mimamori Fudoumyouou 36 Doji

kuukai

It is a statue of "Kobo Daishi Kukai" who is closely related to Inari Okami during his training.

Yakuichi Okami, the god of healing and sickness

God of healing from illness.
It is also said to be the god of breaking ties because he asked him to heal his illness and break the ties with medicine.

God of Peace Inari Okami

This god is said to be the god who governs the war, and the kanji for "塡" means "appeasement" and the kanji for "燹" means "fire caused by war."
This shrine was erected in Showa 16, the year of the beginning of the Pacific War, so it seems that it was erected in the hope of early peace.

Signs of autumn

2023-09-25
The incredibly hot summer is finally over, and it's becoming easier to spend the mornings and evenings.Although there are still days when the temperature exceeds 30 degrees Celsius, I can hear the sounds of autumn insects in the grass, and it feels like autumn.Although it will take a little longer for the leaves to change color, it is now a good season to go to the mountains.Kyoto will be full of people during the autumn tourist season, so please take your time to visit the shrine before then.

In a blink of an eye, tomorrow is August!

Nagoshisai is also going without a hitch, and it's the last day of July. It's August from tomorrow.
It's been a hot summer nationwide this year, and the highest temperature in Kyoto is over 35°C every day.Even so, Fushimi Inari attracts many visitors every day.The approach to the mountain is shaded and it feels a little cooler than in the city, but he still has steep stairs and everyone is drenched in sweat.
Taking a break with water Please come and visit us.

I was skipping the blog.

Before I knew it, I hadn't updated my blog for over half a year.
The number of worshipers and tourists has increased suddenly from autumn, and if you are busy, summer will be in front of you in no time.Especially at the end of the year, he had so many people that he thought it was New Year's, and it was hard to get back to his pre-corona condition. In the meantime, from the New Year to the cherry blossom season, from the latter half of March to the end of Golden Week in May, I was so busy that I thought it was the busiest I have ever been.Things have calmed down a bit now, but every day from early in the morning it is crowded with visitors from abroad. The rainy season is about to start, and there will be more rainy days, so please watch your step.We are looking forward to your visit.
Fox!
In the evening, when I was casually looking at the image captured by the security camera, a fox came into the precincts while there was a slight interruption in the number of people! For a moment I thought my dog ran away, but it's definitely a fox with a thick tail and a fox color. They may appear late at night or early in the morning when it's still dark, but today it's still a little brighter and people are walking around. It was still bright, so I was able to take a still image in color. It makes me happy to think that real foxes live happily in Mt. Inari.

Worshipers are back.

Kitayama cedar

A famous tree produced in Kitayama, Kyoto, which is known for the stage of Yasunari Kawabata's novel "The Old Capital". "Kyoto tree"
Kitayama Log is a traditional Kyoto craft with a 600-year history that is indispensable for teahouses and Sukiya architecture in Kyoto, with its smooth and glossy wood surface and fine grain.
Katsura Imperial Villa, Shugakuin Imperial Villa, Shimabara Sumiya, etc. are typical buildings of Sukiya style using Kitayama logs.

Kitayama Daisugi

Araki Jinja's Daisugi Tree is about 300 years old
Kitayama cedar pruned by the unique forest-growing method "Daisugi Tailoring" devised in Kitayama to collect thin logs called Talki.
Many trunks are grown from one stock, and one stock is renewed like one forest. This tree is very slow growing and takes around 6 years to reach a diameter of 7-20 cm. Araki Jinja's original "votive tablet stand" and "candlestick stand" are made from this tarki.
In recent years, Daisugi is often planted as a garden tree because of its beautiful appearance.
